Regaining strength with guidance.
Your Rehabilitation
Post Operative Rehabilitation
Following your surgery, your recovery and rehabilitation will be personalised to you and your condition. You will be guided through a series of stages based on your progress, milestones, and targets, rather than strictly by time.
Personalised Rehabilitation
Your recovery will be personalised to you and your condition.
It is dependent on multiple factors and based on your progress and not purely a time-based approach. There are milestones and targets to reach prior to proceeding to the next phase of recovery.
Generic stages of rehabilitation may include:
- Post operative recovery and wound management
- Range of movement
- Proprioception and control
- Strength and control
- Functional training
- Sport-specific training
- Graduated return to full activities
Your Rehabilitation
Immediate Post Operative Recovery
Many high-performance athletes are keen to start rehabilitation straight away. There will be a tailored program for you to follow and can be adjusted depending on your progress.
It is important to allow your body to heal and depending on the surgery you have had there are things you will be allowed to do straight away. However, most surgical wounds and dressings don't like sweating, heat and humidity. It is often prudent to allow your wounds to heal before you return to saunas or sweating. We will help you 'focus on what you can do, not on what you can't do' so that you can maximise your recovery. We acknowledge the mental anguish and difficulty that injuries can have to athletes, and it is important that you link in with your friends, family, and sporting clubs, to seek out the supports to help you through.
Your club doctor or GP is a great starting point, however, sometimes you may wish to utilise the services of a Sports Psychologist to help your recovery from the psychological impact of the injury and not just focus on the physical impact of the injury.
Return to Work
Depending on your occupation you may be able to return to office work once your wounds have healed and sealed. This can be around the 2-week review. However, returning to manual labour on uneven terrain may need to be delayed 3 months or more to prevent re-injury.
Return to Sport
Return to sport is specific to your injury, your sport, and your individual recovery. This is not a time-based recovery but a functional criteria-based recovery. There may be some time constraints based on the biology of the healing tissues that may limit your progression through the rehabilitation phases but the final return to sport assessment will be based on your strength, control and safety to return to sport.
